San Diego Restaurant Week EXTENDED!!!
YEA!!!! I LOVE San Diego Restaurant Week! Mike and I always grab at least one other couple and go do a restaurant that we would normally never try for a non-special occasion! Last year, we tried The Butcher Shop in Kearny Mesa and Firefly in Encinitas for the first time – and loved them both. Who ever would have guessed that The Butcher Shop would become one of our absolute favorite San Diego restaurants?
This year, we met up with some friends, and went down to Flemings in La Jolla at the Aventine. It was FABULOUS! The food was wonderful, and the ambiance was heavenly.
San Diego Restaurant Week started a few years ago as a once a year event designed to bring extra traffic in during the slowest times of the year for restaurants. It has now expanded to a three times a year event – with many restaurants now making it Restaurant (Two) Weeks. The next San Diego Restaurant Week continues through Friday, January 27th.
For those of you who have never tried it – I can’t recommend it enough. Select San Diego restaurants create a special three course menu – with their meal being either $20, $30, or $40 for your appetizer, entree, and dessert. You always end up overeating – but you try so many things you might not have otherwise!
For a complete list, visit the San Diego Restaurant Week website. Reservations are strongly encouraged, as many restaurants are full well in advance – especially some of the San Diego premier restaurants such as Mille Fleurs, Marine Room, and Bertrand at Mister A’s!

The 3rd Annual La Costa Oaks Food Drive is Tomorrow!
Every year at this time the La Costa Oaks community pitches in to help those less fortunate and this year is no exception.
The Mewborn Team has been delivering boxes for the past few weeks to neighbors who are interested in contributing on behalf of the San Diego Food Bank. They then simply leave them on their front porch/courtyard and we will come by around noon ( weather permitting ) pick them up and deliver all of the canned/boxed/unperishable goods to the Food Bank.
It is so nice to live in a community that is willing to reach out and help their less fortunate neighbors during the holiday season.

Ready… Set… Run
Carlsbad, CA -
As we enter January, and our Carlsbad neighbors are setting their New Year’s Resolutions – you may hear a few of your friends say, “I think I’m going to run a marathon (or half marathon).”
One of the first local events each year happens to be the Carlsbad Marathon – typically the last weekend of January. The 2010 Carlsbad Marathon has been sponsored by Tri-City Medical Center and has been officially named the Tri-City Medical Center Carlsbad Marathon and Half Marathon.
Although a mouthful, this is known to be a fabulous race in ideal temperatures that winds along the ocean and Carlsbad streets. Also, The Carlsbad Marathon is one of the authorized qualifying races for the prestigious Boston Marathon. This year, the Carlsbad Marathon will be held on January 24th.
For more information, please visit the Carlsbad Marathon home site.

Looking for more Christmas spirit? The Horizon North County Living Nativity will become a new Christmas tradition.
Rancho Santa Fe, CA – Every year, we bundle up and venture into the heart of Rancho Santa Fe for one of the most fun and memorable Christmas experiences of all – The Fifteenth Annual Horizon North County Living Nativity. This event typically runs the last weekend prior to Christmas. This year it is Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday – December 17th through the 20th.
The event is free to all, and has fun for the entire family. They typically have a petting zoo and a mediterranean market place with hot chocolate, hot cider, bread, caramel apples, kabobs, etc. while you are waiting in line to enter the nativity. Then once you enter the gates, you will be guided through Jesus’ life – from Mary and Joseph going to Bethlehem for the census, through Christ’s death and resurrection.
Lines can be long – sometimes an hour or two wait, but it is worth it. But, this is a wonderful event to do with a group of friends. A couple of people can wait in the line, while others are out exploring the market place, and then you switch! I always really love the Horizon North County Living Nativity. The Living Nativity will be operating over the following hours at 6365 El Apajo Road in Rancho Santa Fe.
Thursday, December 17th -6 pm to 9 pm
Friday, December 18th – 6 pm to 9 pm
Saturday, December 19th – 5 pm to 9 pm
Sunday December 20th – 5 to 9 pm

Want Some San Diego Christmas Spirit? Try Ice Skating!
Having a hard time getting into the Christmas spirit? When our weather is 70 and sunny, sometimes it is just hard to really believe that it is December and that Christmas is right around the corner. One of the things I used to do as a child in Indiana winters was to go ice skating. I remember on my first Christmas in San Diego, it was 2001, and warm! It wasn’t until going down to Horton Plaza one Friday night in December, and seeing the decorations and ice skaters, that it started to actually feel like Christmas!
If this is something you would enjoy doing this holiday season, there are a couple of great San Diego options:
From November 19 through January 10, 2010 – The Sycuan’s Fantasy On Ice will be happening in Horton Plaza. The price is $12 for adults and $10 for children. It includes session admission and skate rental. Each session runs about two hours and start at 10:00 am, 12:30 noon, 3:00 pm, 5:30 pm, 8:00 pm.
If you want to go down to Coronado, The Hotel Del’s Skating By The Sea has begun! Most sessions are 3 hour sessions (except the 11 am matinee session, which is 2 hours). The cost of admission and skate rental is $20 for adults and $15 for children. Please see The Hotel Del’s website for dates and times.

December Nights – December 4th and 5th
San Diego, CA – Keeping with a 32 year tradition, San Diego’s Balboa Park will open its walkways and its museum doors for the annual December Nights festival this coming Friday, December 4th and Saturday, December 5th.
December Nights is the largest free community festival in San Diego, and typically brings in about 300,000 attendees. On Friday, December 4th, the event will run from 5 pm to 10 pm. And Saturday, the event will run from noon to 10 pm. The December Nights Activities include the opening of the museums each night from 5 to 9 pm at no charge to the community. The December Nights Activities also include live music, dancing, and entertainment, and the International Chrismas Festival, highlighting the cultures and foods from around the globe.
Parking is extremely limited in Balboa Park – especially when you consider trying to bring 300,000 people into the park. Please consider public transportation or see December Nights Parking for more information.
