La Costa Town Square Update

Carlsbad, CA – As most La Costa, and in particular La Costa Oaks, homeowners know, construction has been halted on La Costa Town Square indefinitely.

A local community organization, North County Advocates, has filed a lawsuit requesting that the development be changed to be more reflective of the neighborhood that it is part of. The corner of La Costa Avenue and Rancho Santa Fe Road is already one of the busiest intersections in Carlsbad.

North County Advocates wants to ensure that La Costa Town Square will provide La Costa with what had been promised – a small community shopping facility, ideally with some small restaurants and upscale shopping – not two gas stations and a big box retail center to crowd the already crowded streets.

However, in addition to the legal troubles regarding La Costa Town Square, there are also has supposedly been a denial of the project from the California Regional Water Quality Control Board. According to a local newspaper, the project failed to comply with local water standards. Supposedly, the denial letter was received in July, however the information was never shared with the public.

We have tried to reach Aspen Properties to get some clarification. However, since the stop of development, they have not returned our calls or emails.

We will continue to try to keep Carlsbad, La Costa, and La Costa Oaks residents informed about updates to La Costa Town Square.

New 760 Dialing Procedures Effective Now – October 24, 2009

Carlsbad, CA - According to the Public Utilities Commission, the amount of numbers available in the 760 area code was about to run out. In order to combat this problem, they chose to adopt an area code overlay.

Effective October 24, 2009, Full Number Dialing Will Be Required For All Local and Long Distance Calls. This will apply to land lines AND cell phones.

New Dialing Rules Checklist
Update your contact information with security and alarm companies.

Re-program speed dial, auto dial, modems and other telephone equipment with your ten-digit number.
Update the contact information of friends, family, neighbors, family doctor, etc.
Start providing your area code when you give out your phone number.
Inform family and friends of the need to dial 10 digits.

Carlsbad End of Summer Activity – Leo Carrillo Film Festival

Carlsbad, CA – With the end of Carlsbad summer, comes the annual Leo Carrillo Film Festival. This is a great way to spend time with your friends. Pack a blanket, some chairs, and a picnic dinner for an inexpensive night out.

The Carlsbad film festival is held in the Leo Carrillo Ranch Historic Park at 6200 Flying LC Lane.

Movies start at sunset. Grounds open at 5 pm for picnics.

La Costa Oaks Homes – Home Safety Alert

La Costa Oaks, La Costa Ridge, La Costa Greens – Carlsbad, CA – For those who have not heard, please do not leave your La Costa home unlocked and unattended.

We have heard of AT LEAST four instances of break ins in La Costa Oaks within the past month. Two have been break ins to cars at approximately 4 am in the morning. Two have been home burglaries in the middle of the day!

One La Costa Oaks neighbor works from home and left their home for about an hour, and found that someone had climbed onto their roof, and through an open balcony door. Another was a La Costa Oaks mother who had gone to the store (again less than an hour). The burglars cut through their screen on an open window in their family room. In both cases, the burglars left with jewelry, cash, etc. – things they could just walk out the front door with in the middle of the day.

The recommendation to La Costa neighbors – please do not leave your home unlocked or windows open when you are in bed or not at home. Also, please ensure that you set your alarm.

We are working with the Carlsbad City Police to set up a La Costa Oaks neighborhood watch. We will update everyone as soon as we schedule a date.

La Costa Town Square Meeting – URGENT

For those living in La Costa Oaks, La Costa Valley, La Costa Ridge and La Costa Greens – this may be important to you. We are trying to keep everyone up to date on what is happening with La Costa Town Square.

The construction and tenants will likely affect our local traffic and home values. A few months ago, the developer, Aspen Properties had one tenant signed – Kohls. As you may know, a few weeks ago, Kohls decided not to move into La Costa Town Square. Gretchen from Aspen Properties stated that Kohls may instead be moving into the building previously occupied by Home Depot Expo. Aspen is currently in discussion with Vons and Ralphs to instead be the anchor tenant.

We have attached a document that states Aspen’s position and plan going forward. We have also attached a letter we received from the City of Carlsbad. The City of Carlsbad is hosting a planning commission meeting this Wednesday, July 1st at 6 pm at 1200 Carlsbad Village Drive to discuss the project. This is an OPEN meeting and we are all encouraged to attend. This does affect us all, and this is a great opportunity for your voice to be heard. water supply is so short that they have instituted water rationing, beginning July 1st in La Costa, CA and Carlsbad, CA.
If you have a home in Carlsbad, CA and would like to know more about Carlsbad’s water rationing,

This same schedule applies to any La Costa or Carlsbad homes served by Olivenhain Municipal Water District and Vallecitos Water District.
La Costa or Carlsbad real estate with odd numbers – water Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday

La Costa or Carlsbad real estate with even numbers – water on Saturday, Monday, and Wednesday.
La Costa or Carlsbad homes please water only between 6:00 pm and 10:00 am.
La Costa or Carlsbad homes please limit watering to no more than 10 minutes per station
La Costa or Carlsbad homes please stop water waste from runoff, overspray, and misdirected sprinklers.
La Costa or Carlsbad homes please use a bucker or hose with a shutoff valve when watering landscaped areas with no irrigation system.

NEW Encinitas Farmer’s Market

One of the best things about living in Encinitas, La Costa, and Carlsbad is the fresh produce! I’m originally from Indiana. My idea of vegetables included corn, potatoes, and tomatoes. I had never had an artichoke or an avocado or asparagus until I moved to California!
Then I found out about farmer’s markets. No matter how great the produce may be at the Carlsbad Costco, or the La Costa Henry’s, or the Carlsbad Jimbo’s – nothing beats the freshness (and often the price) of the local farmer’s market.

The New Encinitas Farmer’s Market is open on Sundays from 2 pm – 5 pm at Flora Vista Elementary School at 1690 Wandering Road, Encinitas – 92024. The farmer’s market is designed to serve inland Encinitas, Olivenhain, Rancho Santa Fe, La Costa, and San Elijo, where there are no community farmer’s markets.

New La Costa Restaurant – La Costa Grill in Carlsbad, CA

If you live in La Costa or Carlsbad, did you notice that the La Costa Crazy Burro closed? Although a fine restaurant, I wasn’t too sad to see it go. There are so many great La Costa and Carlsbad restaurants that this one was really just ok.

Very near La Costa Ridge, and La Costa Greens, we now have the new La Costa Grill. It is a bit more upscale – both in environment and menu than the nearby La Costa El Torito, focusing a bit more on seafood with a mexican flair. But it’s not nearly as upscale – in either environment or menu – as the fabulous Blue Fire Grill at the La Costa Resort.

So, if you are in Carlsbad and happen to be driving by the corner of El Camino Real and Alga / Aviara Parkway, you may want to give the new La Costa Grill a try.
